Thea Frodin, who previously served as a body double for a young Serena Williams in 'King Richard', will make her US Open main-draw singles debut, facing world number two Elena Rybakina after earning a wildcard by winning the USTA Girls' 18s National Championships.

Thea Frodin, a 17-year-old American tennis player, is set to make her main-draw singles debut at the US Open, where she will face world number two Elena Rybakina. Frodin earned her place in the tournament after winning the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Girls' 18s National Championships, securing a coveted wildcard entry.

Frodin's journey to the US Open is unique. Five years ago, she was selected as a tennis-playing body double for the actress portraying a young Serena Williams in the Oscar-nominated film 'King Richard'. At just 12 years old, Frodin worked alongside Will Smith, who played Richard Williams, and developed a deep admiration for Serena, whom she describes as a lifelong inspiration.

From Film Set to Grand Slam Stage

During her time on the set of 'King Richard', Frodin spent several months working closely with Smith and the production team, often filming in challenging weather conditions. She recalls how Smith would bring hot water to keep her warm during cold, rainy shoots. The experience left a lasting impression, and Frodin admits that she adopted some of Serena Williams' playing style, which her coaches later helped her adjust back to her own technique.

Frodin's competitive progress has been rapid. In addition to her wildcard for the US Open, she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open girls' singles earlier this year, marking her best junior Grand Slam result. She also made her WTA Tour qualifying debut in Miami, where she pushed former world number 35 Viktorija Golubic to three sets.

Facing a Major Challenge in New York

Drawn against Elena Rybakina, a two-time major winner and the reigning Australian Open champion, Frodin faces a significant test in her first main-draw Grand Slam match. Ranked 580th in the world, Frodin is focused on enjoying the experience and embracing the atmosphere at her home Grand Slam. She expressed excitement about the opportunity and hopes to perform at her best against one of the world's top players.

While Frodin has yet to meet Serena or Venus Williams in person, she hopes that this US Open will provide the chance to connect with her idols. For now, her attention is firmly on her debut match, which represents a major milestone in her young career.
