Unnamed Sources Policy

How UAE CUE Sports handles rare unnamed and confidential sources, including editorial approval, corroboration, source descriptions and right of response.

UAE CUE Sports prefers named, identifiable and on-the-record sources.

Unnamed sources are used rarely. Anonymity should be an editorial exception rather than a routine reporting method.

This policy explains when confidential or unnamed sourcing may be considered, what safeguards apply and how UAE CUE Sports balances source protection with reader trust.

Why Named Sources Are Preferred

Named sources allow readers to evaluate who is speaking and why that person may be in a position to know the information.

Identification can help readers assess:

  • expertise;
  • professional role;
  • proximity to the information;
  • possible conflicts;
  • accountability.

For these reasons, UAE CUE Sports generally seeks on-the-record information first.

Source Arrangements

Different source arrangements should not be treated as interchangeable.

On the Record

Information and attribution may generally be published with the source identified.

Unnamed or Anonymous

Information may be used, but the source's identity is withheld from readers according to an agreed arrangement.

Confidential

The source's identity or specified information is subject to an agreed confidentiality arrangement.

Off the Record

Information described as off the record should not automatically be treated as publishable.

Source expectations should be clarified before relying on sensitive information.

When an Unnamed Source May Be Considered

UAE CUE Sports may consider anonymity when:

  • the information is significant;
  • the source has direct or credible access to the information;
  • the information cannot reasonably be obtained on the record;
  • there is a legitimate reason for withholding the source's identity;
  • the relevant editor knows the source's identity;
  • the source's motivation has been considered;
  • corroboration is available or can reasonably be sought.

Legitimate Reasons for Confidentiality

A source may have a legitimate reason to request anonymity, including a credible risk of:

  • professional retaliation;
  • loss of access;
  • employment consequences;
  • contractual complications;
  • personal safety concerns;
  • other significant harm associated with identification.

A simple preference not to be named is not automatically sufficient.

Editorial Approval

Anonymous sourcing should receive additional editorial scrutiny.

The relevant editor should understand:

  • who the source is;
  • how the source knows the information;
  • why anonymity is requested;
  • what motivation or conflict the source may have;
  • whether the information can be independently corroborated;
  • whether publication serves a legitimate editorial purpose.

Source Descriptions

When an unnamed source is used, UAE CUE Sports should provide enough description for readers to understand why the source may be credible without unnecessarily exposing the person's identity.

Examples might include a description of the source's relevant role or proximity to an event.

Descriptions should not intentionally mislead readers about the source's position or knowledge.

Corroboration

Anonymous claims should be corroborated where reasonably possible.

Corroboration may come from:

  • additional independent sources;
  • official documents;
  • competition records;
  • data;
  • emails or written communications;
  • public records;
  • official statements;
  • other evidence consistent with the claim.

Single-Source Anonymous Claims

UAE CUE Sports generally avoids relying on a single anonymous source for serious allegations involving misconduct, legal wrongdoing, cheating, financial impropriety or significant reputational harm.

The more serious the allegation, the stronger the expected verification.

When We Generally Avoid Anonymous Sourcing

Anonymous sources should not normally be used merely to publish:

  • personal attacks;
  • unsupported allegations;
  • competitor criticism;
  • promotional claims;
  • rumors;
  • speculation;
  • unverified claims about private behavior;
  • statements whose main purpose is reputational harm.

Athletes, Coaches and Officials

Sports participants may sometimes have legitimate reasons to speak confidentially, particularly where employment, selection, team relationships or governing-body processes are involved.

The existence of such a reason does not remove the need to evaluate the source's knowledge and motivation.

Organizations and Commercial Sources

Companies, venues, academies, event organizers and commercial competitors may have direct financial interests in a story.

Anonymous commercial claims should therefore be treated with particular caution.

UAE CUE Sports should not allow anonymity to disguise advertising, competitor attacks or promotional messaging as independent information.

Sensitive Allegations

Claims involving cheating, disciplinary misconduct, crime, legal disputes, safety or serious reputational harm require additional scrutiny.

Relevant considerations may include:

  • source proximity;
  • documentary evidence;
  • independent corroboration;
  • official proceedings;
  • whether the allegation has already been made publicly;
  • whether the subject should be offered a right of response.

Medical, Legal, Financial and Safety Claims

UAE CUE Sports is primarily a sports publication.

Anonymous personal claims about diagnosis, treatment, legal liability, financial misconduct or safety risks should not be treated as established fact without appropriate supporting evidence.

Right of Response

When an unnamed source makes a serious allegation about an identifiable person or organization, UAE CUE Sports should consider seeking a relevant response before publication where practical.

The response should not automatically reveal the confidential source's identity.

Protecting Confidentiality

Where UAE CUE Sports has legitimately agreed to protect a source's identity, editorial handling should respect that agreement.

Information that could unnecessarily reveal a confidential source should not be published merely to make the article appear more detailed.

UAE CUE Sports should not promise confidentiality casually or when it cannot reasonably be maintained.

No Promise to Reveal Sources

UAE CUE Sports does not promise readers, companies or other outside parties that a legitimately confidential source will be publicly identified in response to pressure or disagreement with an article.

Confidentiality and factual accuracy are separate questions.

Anonymous Tips

Anonymous tips may provide leads, but a tip alone is not necessarily sufficient for publication.

A tip may lead to:

  • additional reporting;
  • document searches;
  • requests for official comment;
  • other source interviews;
  • no publication if the information cannot be adequately supported.

Corrections Involving Confidential Sources

Confidential sourcing does not remove our obligation to correct material factual errors.

If a confidential source's information is later shown to be materially wrong, UAE CUE Sports may correct the article without identifying the source.

Reader Trust

Anonymous sourcing can reduce transparency, which is why UAE CUE Sports uses it rarely.

When it is necessary, the goal is to provide readers with enough context to understand why the source is being used while protecting a legitimate confidentiality interest.
