Dao Van Ly twice pulled level, but Nguyen Quoc Nguyen sealed their PBA Tour derby with an 11-2 fifth set in South Korea.

A seven-point opening run put Nguyen Quoc Nguyen in front against Dao Van Ly, though the lead would not last.

The three-cushion Round of 16 match ended on 10 October in South Korea. StarNews Korea identified Nguyen, of Hana Card, and Van Ly, of NH NongHyup Card, as the only Vietnamese players in this part of the tournament.

Thanh Niên reported that both players reached the Round of 16 after 3-2 wins. Nguyen beat Ju Si-yoon, producing an 11-point run in the first set and taking the decider 11-9; Van Ly edged Nguyen Duc Anh Chien 11-10 in his deciding set.

Five sets swing between the Vietnamese rivals

Nguyen started with a seven-point run and won the opener 15-3. Van Ly answered with a 15-2 win to level the match. Nguyen then took the third set by the same scoreline.

In the fourth inning, Nguyen produced an eight-point run, finishing it with a precise "a-cushion" shot from a difficult position. Van Ly took the fourth set 15-7 and forced a decider.

Nguyen closed the match 11-2 in the fifth set, securing the 3-2 result.

Quarter-final places take shape

Nguyen advances from the 2026-2027 PBA Tour Round of 16. Spain's David Zapata has also progressed. So has David Martinez, also of Spain. South Korea's Cho Kyeong-hui is through, as is Lee Seung-jin. Kim Kwan-woo and Noh Jeong-hyun have advanced. Kim Jun-tae is also listed among those through.

Thanh Niên noted that Nguyen's victory guaranteed Vietnam a quarter-final place: both Vietnamese players had reached the Round of 16, so their head-to-head match ensured one would advance.

StarNews Korea listed Nguyen's quarter-final against Kim Kwan-woo for 11 October at 11:30 a.m. Korea time. The schedule also included David Saffata versus David Martinez, Choi Jong-hwi versus Lee Seung-jin, and Noh Jong-hyun versus Kim Jun-tae.
