The University of Sharjah will host the World University Powerlifting Championships from 26 to 30 November 2026. Organisers are drawing on the university's experience with the 2023 Asian championship.

Emirates News Agency reported on 14 October that student-athletes from different countries will compete at the University of Sharjah's sports complex from 26 to 30 November 2026. The five-day World University Powerlifting Championships will test the university's ability to stage an international sporting event. Dr Eid Kanaan, Dean of Student Affairs and vice-chair of the organising committee, said the event will support students and leave a lasting sports legacy.

Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Vice Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, is patron of the championship. The UAE Ministry of Sport and the International University Sports Federation are among the organising partners. The Sharjah Sports Council and the UAE Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation are also involved. The UAE School and University Sports Federation completes the list.

Kanaan said the championship reflects the university's standing and its ability to host international sporting events. Preparations are underway with partners, covering the practical work needed to stage the competition.

The university has a recent point of comparison: it hosted the Asian University Powerlifting Cup in 2023. Kanaan said the experience helped staff build expertise and prepare for international events. He has called that tournament an important organisational learning experience ahead of larger competitions.

Sharjah also hosts other sporting events. The Sir Bu Nair 60-foot dhow race was covered in a recent Sharjah race report. The university championship will bring an international competition focused on student-athletes.

Kanaan said the 2026 edition carries greater ambition and responsibility than the earlier Asian event. The committee aims to give participating delegations and federations a strong experience.

He linked the championship to the university's effort to balance academic achievement with sport. The event is also intended to develop leadership and discipline among students. Kanaan said university sport can help identify talent, while fair competition and teamwork can build connections among students from different countries.

The committee wants the championship to strengthen the university's standing as a host for global university competitions. It also aims to leave a sports legacy after the delegations depart.
