The Emirates News Agency, WAM, confirmed the championships will run from 26 to 30 November at the University of Sharjah. Sharjah24 has also reported preparations for the event.
The championship will be held under the patronage of Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, according to WAM.
Competition and student exchange
University director Professor Dr Esameldin Agamy called the championship a welcome addition to the institution's work in university sport. He said it would bring students from different cultures together to compete, pursue sporting ambitions, build friendships and share experience. Students from countries around the world are expected to take part, Fana News reports. Organisers hope the event will strengthen sport in the university community and offer an international competition platform.
Students, Agamy added, are partners in making the event a success. Their role matters.
FISU materials also list a separate World University Weightlifting Championship in Doha, held from 8 to 12 September 2026. That was a different competition from the powerlifting championship scheduled for Sharjah.
A university stage for global sport
Agamy also credited Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University, for his support. He said the event reflected Sharjah's place as a destination for university sport. Organisers also intend to introduce visiting students to Sharjah's culture and values.
The championship offers students a place to compete and meet peers from other countries. Its success will depend on whether students get those opportunities. Their role in hosting the event, and the campus setting, are central to that goal.
